The valleys of the Northern Region of Ghana are known to be very fertile and have great potential for livestock production. As well as tsetse control, a livestock development programme would need to address the need for the development of forage and water supplies, the genetic improvement of the West African Shorthorn, infrastructural development (roads, transportation, drinking water, schools and health facilities), and the formation of livestock cooperatives and effective linkages with relevant institutions.
